Parent Student Workshops

I am proposing a series of four workshops for parents and their students to explore all the ways technology can be use to help their children improve themselves and reach their maximum potential.

I want to see parents, students and teachers all get on the same page. Here is the concept that I developed along with our school librarian last year. The initial workshops were not well attended because of the time of year (Spring) and the lack of advertisement. This year we are making a push to have them happen at the start of the year.

Hopefully these workshops will help families to learn how to use computers to effectively communicate between their teachers and other school personnel.  Participants will learn how to access school information, calendars and homework.  Google Documents and saving work to the Internet will be demonstrated along with basic Microsoft Office skills.  There will be a workshop dedicated to homework helpers and databases parents and students can access for free and another one for Career Exploration sites.  If there is money available for printing, binders and plastic sheets, I would like each parent /student to start their own “Edufolio” that they can use to save information related to their student’s educational success such as: recommendation letters, scholarships, career and college planning.

Workshop 1:  Communication in the 21st Century
                     1. Edline information * sending email
                     2. Gmail - how to create an account, digital foot print, having a separate account for school
                     3. How to locate teachers' email addresses, adding attachments
                     4. Etiquette and Safety

Workshop 2:  Homework Helpers - Explore Everett Library Media and CADL Web Sites
1. SIRS Researcher
2. The World and I
                3.  Khan Academy
                4.  CADL (Capital Area District Library - Use your public libraries for help)

Workshop 3:  Don’t let the “Computer Eat Your Homework” Importance of Saving

1. Saving files that can be read by older computers, different ways files can be saved

                        2. Doing attachments in email
 3. Using Google Documents to save work and edit it

Workshop 4:  Plan for the Future
1.  Career Exploration - What future career best fits you
                 2.   Resumes and Letters
                     3.  Scholarships

Back to Blogging

Time to ask some questions to spark your writing and research ideas.

It is important when you doing a research essay to narrow down your topic and ask yourself a specific question related to what you want to learn.

Let me know your ideas and I will help you come up with a question. We can come up with a PROPOSAL for your essay.

Topics for Your Blogs

For my Everett Students:

I can see that your favorite topic is going to be the Anime shows that you love to watch. I am happy to see that you have something that you can write about and share the interest with each other.

I do want you to broaden the range of your writing topics. Monday and Friday can be about Anime. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you need to find something different to write about and if you need help coming up with ideas, I will help.

To my students

This is a way we can share our ideas with each other. You can write about what is happening in your life, your thoughts about movies you have seen, your favorite books or TV series and any other ideas you may want to share with the world.

It is my thought that the more you write the better writer you will become.
So let's get writing!!!!!
